Archbishop's new Secretary for International Development

The Revd Rachel Carnegie has worked in international development since 1985. Her main focus has been on the health and development of children and young people and on responses to HIV, working with both secular and faith-based organisations. She has worked extensively in Asia and Africa, with organisations including UNICEF, Save the Children, the Child-to-Child Trust, and, most recently, Tearfund. Her role at Tearfund has been to support church responses to HIV, developing the role of the local church as well as promoting the global church's voice in advocacy. This has also involved collaborating with a range of Anglican partners at provincial and diocesan levels.

She said:  "The Archbishop of Canterbury has an inspiring vision for the role of faith in development and I am thrilled at the opportunity to support his ministry in this area. Churches across the Anglican Communion play a major role in providing education and health services, in tackling poverty and responding to disasters. It will be a privilege to engage with these programmes and to assist in building further partnerships with governments and the international development community."

Rachel has a degree from Cambridge University and a Masters in Education in International Development from Sussex University. Following theological studies, she was ordained in 2004 and has since served as a non-stipendiary minister in Southwark Diocese, alongside her work in development.

Rachel has a particular interest in facilitating dialogue between faith groups, governments and secular development agencies to build understanding on the distinctive contribution of local faith communities to development.
