Be the change that you want to see

"I have the highest admiration for young people and I believe very strongly that they are dreamers, they are idealists, they believe it is possible to make poverty history and to have a world without war and where there is no hunger."

"I want to be able to enable young people to change the world and to make the world the place that God wants it to become."

I remember those words of Mahatma Gandhi who said: "Be the change you want to see in the world." My prayer is that young people will be inspired and enabled to be that change.

The Archbishop of York Youth Trust has been set up to help and motivate young people to be leaders of change in their local communities. The Youth Trust is geared up to enable people up to the age of 25 in the North of England, from Chester to the Scottish Borders.

Part of the Youth Trust's work will focus upon areas of economic deprivation, through providing opportunities to help young people develop their leadership potential. It will focus on fostering leadership skills and initiative amongst the young, especially where young Christians are working alongside others in the service of the common good.

The Archbishop of York Youth Trust Awards - Faith, Hope and Charity

The first Archbishop of York Youth Trust Awards was held on Saturday 12th September 2009 at Bishopthorpe Palace, York. Awards were presented to young people who are expressing their faith in Christ by making a difference to the world they live in.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, an inspiring role model for a fresh generation of world-changers, was not able to co-host the event with Archbishop John Sentamu in giving the awards to young people from the north of England but he sent video messages. Each award was accompanied by a grant from the Youth Trust towards the work in which the young people are involved.

The awards presented in 2009 will be on the first section of the scheme – 'Faith' – the next two years will see the focus turning to 'Hope' and 'Charity'.

The award winners have demonstrated ways in which they are changing their communities for the better through action inspired by their faith.
