Archbishop welcomes Chief Rabbi's peerage

Monday 13 July 2009

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has today welcomed the announcement by the House of Lords Appointment Commission to award a peerage to the Chief Rabbi, Dr Sir Jonathan Sacks.

Dr Williams said:

"I am absolutely delighted by this news. There are few intellectuals in this country with a firmer grasp of the moral and social challenges facing our nation or a greater capacity to articulate how we should be meeting them. The House of Lords will be greatly strengthened by his appointment".
