A very special day for Stamford Bridge - Archbishop confirms 15
Monday 04 June 2007
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, will confirm fifteen people aged from 10 to 48 in a service beginning at 10.45am on Sunday 3rd June in the Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Stamford Bridge, East Riding of Yorkshire
The fifteen candidates are all parishioners of Stamford Bridge (population 3,400). They include:
- 5 adults, of whom Mandy and Sally Powers are sisters; and Moira Bryan who is the mother of Lucy Bryan (see below);
- Lucy Bryan, a student at Pocklington School;
- Rachel Palmer, a student at Archbishop Holgate's Church of England Secondary School, York;
- 8 pupils of Stamford Bridge Primary School, of whom Daniel Mathieson is also to be baptised by the Archbishop.
The sacrament of Confirmation is received by those who have been baptised and have reached a stage in their Christian faith where they are ready to make a mature commitment to follow Jesus Christ. The Archbishop will place his hands on the head of each candidate and pray for the Holy Spirit to bless and strengthen them in their life's journey.
All the candidates have been prepared for Confirmation over the last few months by the Reverend Diane Westmoreland, Vicar of Stamford Bridge, assisted by Readers (lay ministers) Maggy Ellison, David Osborne and David Sellick. They will be Confirmed during the regular 10.45am service which takes place on the first Sunday of every month at St John the Baptist Parish Church.
Mandy Powers says, "Sally and I think it's a great honour that the Archbishop is coming to confirm us. To be confirmed is a privilege and it's a joy to be joining the Christian church. The confirmation classes have helped us to find out more about ourselves and the Christian faith."
Jennifer Hunt (aged 10; one of the Stamford Bridge Primary School pupils) says, "The classes have been very enjoyable and we've had a lot of fun learning about Jesus. It will be great to be confirmed by someone famous!"
Archbishop Sentamu is only due to conduct three Confirmation service is his own Diocese of York during 2007: the majority of Confirmation services are taken by the Suffragan (assistant) Bishops of Hull, Whitby and Selby.
Dr Sentamu said, "Stamford Bridge is a caring community where fifteen people want to give their lives to following Jesus Christ - isn't that fantastic? They want to be part of God's movement for change in our world - to be his hands and his feet and his voice in their streets and schools and workplaces. This is a very special day for all of them, for the leaders of the Church who are making a real difference and for Stamford Bridge as a whole."
