Monday 11th July 2011

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, will visit Malton on Sunday 17th July. He will be visiting St Michael's Church for its morning service at 9.30am, before going to the Malton Show at Scampston where the Archbishop is President of the Show this year.

The Priest-in-Charge of St. Michael's Church, the Revd Peter Bowes said "We're all looking forward to welcoming the Archbishop to St. Michael's for a very busy Service. The Methodist Church in Malton is celebrating its 200th birthday and St. Leonard's Roman Catholic Church is marking the 40th Anniversary of their church being gifted by the Diocese of York to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough. Both congregations will be joining us to celebrate. The congregation of St. Mary's Old Malton will also be there. The different churches all work together very closely in Malton, so it is great news that everyone will be coming to greet the Archbishop. Everyone is welcome to attend the service and hear the Archbishop".

After visiting St Michael’s Church, the Archbishop will visit the Malton Show at Scampston.

Charlie Breese, Acting Chairman of the Organising Committee said, “Malton Show Committee are absolutely delighted to have the Archbishop as their President for this year; our 125th anniversary year. We look forward to welcoming him and his wife Margaret to the Show and look forward to introducing them to our exhibitors and visitors during their visit.  The Archbishop has kindly agreed to present a Life Membership award to Ian Hamilton which will be done in the main ring during the afternoon.  There are only 10 Life Members and this award is given to individuals who have given outstanding service to the Show over the years. Mr Hamilton, who will remain in the Committee, is a former Chairman and a very worthy recipient.  The Archbishop will also make a small address from the main ring which we will all look forward to greatly”.
