Archbishop to Lead Celebration of ‘Vital’ Scripture Union
Wednesday 14th November 2012Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu is to give the keynote address at a Celebration of Scripture Union taking place in central London on Saturday 24 November.
Scripture Union, which is marking 146 years since its founding, will use the event to celebrate some of the ‘heroes’ of the movement from down the years, and share stories of how God is using SU to reach children, young people and families today.
Over 250 former and current staff, volunteers and friends of the ministry are expected to attend the Celebration, which takes place at Regent Hall in the heart of London’s Oxford Street.
‘As we near our 150th anniversary, Scripture Union remains a vital and dynamic part of the church in England and Wales,’ comments Rev Tim Hastie-Smith, current National Director. ‘Though we’ve changed shape through the years, God continues to use us to impact the lives of children, young people and their families all across the nation. There’s so much to give thanks for – and that’s what this Celebration is all about.’
Scripture Union continues to be a leader in evangelism and discipleship focused on children and young people. Through schools work and church-based clubs, holidays and beach missions, books and products including the market-leading children’s work resource, Light, SU is more committed than ever to reaching unreached children, young people and their families with the good news of Jesus.
The Celebration event will recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to Scripture Union, nominated by those who are attending. These ‘heroes’ are notable for the length of time they have served SU, the commitment they have shown or the contribution they have made to the ministry.
Some free tickets to the event are still available and can be obtained by registering online at www.scriptureunion.org.uk/celebration
