Archbishop Sentamu Visits Tees Valley

Tees Valley Visit

Wednesday 15th May 2013

The Archbishop of York, the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu, will visit town and country on a trip to Tees Valley on Thursday 16th May.

In Stockton, the Archbishop will be visiting Tees Valley Unlimited, the Local Enterprise Partnership and then officers of Middlesbrough Town Council, as well as meeting pupils, staff and governors at Newport Primary School.  After visiting Middlesbrough, he will be meeting with Major Johnny Shaw, an arable farmer at Welburn Manor Farm near Kirkbymoorside.

Archbishop Sentamu said, “It’s a time of great struggle for people in both urban and rural areas at the moment, and I’m looking forward to meeting people on Thursday and hearing how things are with them.  But in the midst of difficulties, there are great things happening – I want to hear how the staff of Tees Valley Unlimited are striving to deliver jobs and economic growth across the Tees Valley, and how Major Johnny Shaw is faring  despite difficult weather for farming.  And I’m especially looking forward to meeting the children from Newport Primary School - young people are our greatest hope and bring us such potential for an exciting future.”

Julie Sutton, Headteacher of Newport Primary School said, “Archbishop Sentamu’s visit will include a tour of the school and an opportunity to speak to the school council members and other pupils about making the most of their opportunities for the future.  It’s an exciting opportunity for the pupils to have such a special visitor to the school and one who demonstrates a real interest in the local area and the daily challenges that our pupils and their community meet each day. I am sure that Archbishop Sentamu will be greatly encouraged by the optimism and positivity that our school community upholds.”

Stephen Catchpole, managing director of Tees Valley Unlimited said, “We are delighted to welcome Archbishop Sentamu to Tees Valley and have the opportunity to tell him about the positive things that are happening here - in particular how TVU and partners are working to attract new investment, create jobs and support our next generation workforce.   We know Tees Valley is a great area in which to live and work and are happy to showcase that as often as we can.”
