Friends of York Hospitals Celebrate 60 Years Service

Friends of York Hospital

Thursday 11th July 2013

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu is to welcome members and volunteers of the Friends of York Hospitals tonight at Bishopthorpe Palace as they celebrate 60 years of service.

Mr John Pratt, President of Friends of York Hospitals, is to give an address about the work of the charity. The Friends of York Hospitals was established 60 years ago at which time there were some ten active hospitals in the York area.  Today, FOYH concentrates its activities at the Wigginton Road site, with over 100 volunteers in the York Teaching Hospital.

Mr Derek De Vere, Chairman of the Friends of York Hospitals, said: “Above all we in the Friends care about people, as can be seen from the numbers of volunteers we have and the amount we have been able to contribute to vital equipment purchases to help patients in York Hospital. However we are always looking to expand our volunteers and fundraisers and anyone interested in joining the Friends should contact our helpline on York (01904) 726262. We hope to be around for at least another 60 years and are proud to help people in York hospital. We are delighted to have our Patron the Archbishop of York’s support in our 60th year celebrations today”.

Mrs Jenny Hildyard, Trustee and Honorary Secretary of the FOYH said: “Fundraising is always a vital activity for us.  Over the years the Friends have contributed substantial sums to many Hospital projects and we work very closely with Hospital management so all projects have direct benefit to patients.  In 2012 the Friends inherited a large legacy – this has enabled us to donate some £160,000 to a variety of major projects. Volunteering opportunities for the Friends are many and diverse but perhaps at the centre of what we do is providing that extra friendly personal contact which makes all the difference to patients who find themselves in hospital”.

The Archbishop of York said: “As patron of this charity, I am delighted to welcome the Friends of York Hospitals here at Bishopthorpe and to give thanks for their 60 years of service.  It’s important that we recognise people giving up their time and sharing their skills to serve others.  Volunteering is so important and I would like to encourage everyone to play a part. Each of us can make a difference.   Could you help out by reading books to patients on wards or perhaps serve refreshments for a recovering patient?  Don’t wait – become a volunteer today.”

The Sheriff and Sheriff's Lady, Councillor Brian Watson and Mrs Marcia Watson,   as well as the FoYH President, Chairperson and Secretary will attend the Reception together with Mr David de Silva, Vice Chairperson of FOYH and Mr Alan Rose, Chairman of the NHS Trust, York Hospital. There will be up to seventy other important Friends members also at the Reception.
