Archbishop Sentamu’s Cleveland Circuit

Thursday 11th September 2014

The Archbishop of York is spending tomorrow (Friday 12 September 2014) in Pickering, Kirkbymoorside, Whitby and Redcar on his Archdeaconry visit of Cleveland. He is to be accompanied by the Bishop Suffragan of Whitby, Paul Ferguson throughout the day.

The Archbishop of York said: “I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow – Archdeaconry visits allow me to take a closer look at what’s going on in one area of the York Diocese.  Cleveland has much to offer and is blessed with a diversity of urban, rural and coastal communities with different opportunities and challenges for residents.”

Dr John Sentamu is starting his visit at St Peter’s & St Paul’s Church, Pickering with a public service of Morning Prayer before his visit to Micro Metalsmiths, a specialist provider of casting and precision engineering components for a wide range of industry sectors.  The Archbishop is to tour the family-run business which celebrates its 50th anniversary year in 2014.

Dr Sentamu will then call in at the Whitby Mission & Seafarers Centre and he will also visit the Whitby & District Fishing Industry Training School, where he will meet with staff and learners at 12.45pm.

At 2.15pm, the Archbishop is to visit the Whitby RNLI, one of the oldest and busiest stations in the North-East.

All are welcome to attend the service of Evening Prayer at St Peter’s Church, Redcar at 5.30pm.  Later on, at 7pm in the Church, the Archbishop will be taking part in a question and answer session at which the Archbishop will speak about his life and faith and his extraordinary journey from Uganda to Yorkshire.  The event is free to attend.

The Diocese of York has three Archdeaconries; Cleveland, York and Hull.  More information about them can be found here:  http://dioceseofyork.org.uk/people-and-places/finding-a-church/
