Archbishop Dedicates Organ In Memory Of Prof. Henry Chadwick

Tuesday 21st October 2014

The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu is to dedicate the newly-built organ in Bishopthorpe Chapel in thanksgiving for the life of Professor Henry Chadwick, his former tutor at Cambridge.

The formal dedication is to take place during an Evensong service to be held tomorrow at Bishopthorpe Chapel at 4.30pm in the presence of members of Professor Chadwick’s family.

Geoffrey Coffin who built the organ will also play J S Bach’s ‘Gigue’ Fugue in G-Major at the service.  Mr Philip Moore, a former organist at York Minster will also be present.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said: “Henry Chadwick was a wonderful priest, pastor, theologian and musician – it is right and fitting that this organ is dedicated to him and it will be wonderful to hear Bach’s music played in the Chapel. The inscription on the plaque reads ‘To the Glory of God and in Thanksgiving for his life’.  I am thankful to Geoffrey Coffin for building this organ along with his staff members and I look forward also to welcoming Mrs Chadwick and her daughter Juliet to this joyful service”.
