Archbishops to join CofE tweeting campaign #Christmasmeans

Monday 22nd December 2014

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby (@JustinWelby) and the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu (@johnsentamu) will be using the hashtag #ChristmasMeans in order to spread the message of the real meaning of Christmas.

From the 23rd December until Christmas Day, spearheaded by the Church of England’s twitter account (@c_of_e), congregations and clergy in our 12,000 parishes are being encouraged to get out their smartphones to let as many people as possible know the joy and meaning of Christmas.

Church leaders have shared their #ChristmasMeans message in a Church of England podcast released today with the Bishop of Chelmsford, Stephen Cottrell talking about how angels sang the first protest song "It was saying 'There's a different way of living".

The Archbishop of York said: “Christmas means letting the light of Christ shine out in what we do and what we say.  Don’t follow the path, rather be bold and set out new paths for others to follow.  God’s message is one of great joy and hope for the world – embrace His love”.

“We are delighted that #ChristmasMeans gives us this opportunity for parishes to take the good news of the first Christmas beyond churches and into people’s lives and homes, ” says the Revd Arun Arora (@RevArun), Director of Communications at the Archbishops’ Council.

The hashtag #ChristmasMeans goes live on December 23rd. Tweets can be expected from carol, crib and midnight services, before carrying on into Christmas morning services.

#ChristmasMeans follows on from the successful #EasterMeans campaign earlier this year which reached 29 million people from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday.
