Archbishop of York to Preach at Memorial Service for Janani Luwum

Friday 13th February 2015

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu is to preach at the International Celebration of Archbishop Janani Luwum to be held at Wii Gweng, Mucwini, Uganda, on Monday 16 February 2015. The Revd Jennifer Luwum, granddaughter of Janani Luwum, will read at the service.

The Archbishop of York is to join Ugandans making the pilgrimage to Archbishop Luwum’s home village and burial site in Mucwini.

The Archbishop of York was invited to preach by Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali.  Archbishop John Baptist Odama, the Roman-Catholic Archbishop of Gulu, will lead the intercessions at the Memorial Service.

Dr John Sentamu, who was a strong oponent of the dictator Idi Amin and had to leave Uganda in 1974, said: “Archbishop Luwum was a great friend, a determined shepherd and a remarkable leader. When I finished my degree in theology, I was hoping to return to Uganda and work alongside Janani Luwum.  Sadly he was brutally killed by Idi Amin and I was advised it would end in death if I returned to Uganda after Janani had been murdered. Martyrs like Janani show us that following Christ and his teaching to love and serve others is costly.  Janani’s love of Christ should inspire all of us to live out the Good News of God in Jesus Christ in our lives”

The text of the Archbishop’s sermon at the Memorial Service is not available for publication.
