Staindrop Young Leaders

Friday 20th March 2015

The Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Paul Butler congratulated and awarded 49 Year 5 and 6 pupils with their Young Leaders Award at Staindrop Church of England Primary school this afternoon.

Bishop Paul said: “I was delighted to hear more about the work that these pupils have done for their Young Leaders Awards. The children organised a luncheon club for the local elderly residents in the village hall at Christmas where they sang carols and gave them individual Christmas decorations and biscuits as gifts. Apparently one lady commented that she hadn’t been looking forward to Christmas, but seeing the children had made her smile and now look forward to it! It was a joy to join in with parents, pupils, teachers and governors at the school in congratulating their efforts”

The aim of Young Leaders Award, developed by the Archbishop of York Youth Trust is to equip young people to ‘be the change they want to see’ in their schools and local communities. The Awards are available at key stages 2, 3, 4 and Post 16.

Head teacher Steve Whelerton said: “The Young Leaders Award underpins the vision and values that we have at Staindrop Primary School. We encourage all our children to aim high in their achievement but our aspirations are that the children will go on to reach their full potential and develop key life skills and qualities along the way. The Young Leaders Award has been a great resource that has helped our students to develop their leadership skills, help them to realise how they can ‘be the change they want to see’ and grow into the leaders of the future.”
