Statement from the Archbishop of York on the nomination of the Venerable Rachel Treweek as Bishop of Gloucester

The Venerable Rachel Treweek

Thursday 26th March 2015

The nomination of the Venerable Rachel Treweek for election as Bishop of Gloucester fills me with joy and thanksgiving to God for her partnership in the Gospel.

I have known her from when I became Bishop for Stepney in 1996 and at the time she was Associate Vicar at St George’s Tufnell Park. It was a joy to Install her as Vicar of St James the Less Bethnal Green in 1999 and I appointed her as my Officer for Continuing Ministerial Education. She set up a new system from scratch and delivered it with great aplomb.

Rachel is a priest who cares deeply about the good news of God in Jesus Christ and has a deep love for people and, in the words of St Paul, she is always, ‘outdoing others in showing honour’. She builds strong relationships with people and is an experienced reconciler.

My prayer for her is that God will keep her in the joy, simplicity, and compassion of Christ’s Holy Gospel.

Listen to the Church of England Podcast - 27 March 2015

This week's podcast was recorded at Leicester Cathedral on the day the remains of Richard III were reburied. It includes an interview with a direct descendent of King Richard III, and we hear from Jacquie Binns who designed and created the cloth that covered the coffin. We also hear from the women announced as the new Bishops of Hull and Gloucester this week.
