Royal and heavenly seal of approval for York Minster Mystery Plays 2016

York Mystery Plays

Tuesday 15th September 2015

His Royal Highness the Duke of York and Archbishop of York confirmed as Patron and President for the York Minster Mystery Plays 2016

Both HRH and the Archbishop have been long standing supporters of the Plays, which return to the Minster in May 2016 for only the second time in their near 700 year history.

The cathedral’s magnificent Nave will be transformed into a 1,000-seater theatre for the production, which runs for five weeks from 26 May to 30 June.

The Duke of York said: “I am delighted that the York Mystery Plays are once again to be performed in the setting of the Minster and as Patron, I wish great success to all those who are involved.”

Dr Sentamu, who was Patron of the plays at Museum Gardens in 2012, said: “I’m thrilled that York Minster is continuing the region’s cultural and religious heritage by staging the Mystery Plays next year.  To have God’s story from creation to last judgement brought to life in this place of wonder will I hope inspire all who come to see it, as the Minster itself has inspired people for over a millennium.”

In keeping with tradition, a community cast will be at the centre of the production with just one professional actor, and recruitment for key roles including Adam, Eve, Noah and Satan is taking place this autumn.

An army of behind-the-scenes volunteers known as Mystery Makers are also currently being recruited for roles from prop makers to wardrobe assistants, seamstresses to backstage crew.

Tickets for the 2016 production go on sale in January 2016.
