The Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards Shortlist

Tuesday 15th September 2015

The Yorkshire Post shortlist includes companies of all shapes and sizes. They include household names and start-up firms who are dreaming of greatness. What they all have in common is a passionate enterprising spirit, combined with the traditional Yorkshire virtues of thrift and common sense.

The Yorkshire Post is celebrating firms who nurture and support their staff, and display a strong social conscience. Many of these firms are developing world-leading technologies.

Earlier this month, a judging panel met at The Yorkshire Post’s headquarters in Leeds to decide who will walk away with the trophies on the most glittering night in the region’s corporate calendar.

Nicola Furbisher, managing editor of The Yorkshire Post, chaired the judging session, which included representatives from DLA Piper, Yorkshire Bank, PwC and Bradford University School of Management.

Juliette Healey, the regional agent for the Bank of England, was also on the panel, which perused more than 160 entries.

The awards programme is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, focusing on the theme of responsibility in business.

Over the years, the ceremony has attracted senior politicians as headline speakers with recent appearances from Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin, then Business Secretary Vince Cable and Chancellor George Osborne.

In 2008, The Yorkshire Post welcomed David Cameron, who was then the leader of the opposition. Addressing last October’s ceremony, Mr Duncan Smith praised Yorkshire businesses for creating jobs and helping to drive Britain’s economic recovery.

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire and last year’s individual winner, said the awards help to create “a strong and positive profile” for the region.

The winner of this year’s award for individual excellence will be revealed on the night.

The special guest this year will be the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu. He will speak about responsibility in business in his address.

Dr Sentamu has spoken out before on the issue of inequality in society, and he has warned that the concepts of fairness and income equality are struggling to survive.

DLA Piper, PwC and Yorkshire Bank are the awards’ main sponsors; Bradford University School of Management, Drax Group, QBE Insurance and thebigword are the associate sponsors.

Justin Webb, of the BBC’s Today programme, will reprise his star turn as master of ceremonies at the dinner which is being held on October 14.
