Archbishop of York Visits Hexham

Monday 2nd November 2015

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, will join a service of celebration and commitment for the launch of Tynedale Community Bank (TCB) in Hexham Abbey on Friday 6th November 2015.

Inspired by the Church of England's call for a return to community-based banking, TCB offers a viable alternative to pay-day lenders for everyone living or working in the Tynedale area of Northumberland.

Tynedale Community Bank will be introduced at a presentation in Hexham Abbey's North Transept at 10.30am which will include contributions by Guy Opperman MP (Hexham), Kevan Jones MP (North Durham; Board Member of Prince Bishops Credit Union) and local Community Banking Champion Lauren Langton.

During the presentation, Rector of Hexham the Revd Canon Dr Dagmar Winter will sign up to become a member of TCB.

Dr Sentamu will give a short address during the 11.30am service, after which he will join TCB volunteers outside the Abbey at approximately 12.00 noon handing out information and membership forms in Hexham marketplace.

During the afternoon Dr Sentamu will visit two community facilities in Hexham to meet users, volunteers and staff and help to spread information about Tynedale Community Bank.

At 1.45pm Archbishop Sentamu will open the ‘Voices and Choices’ exhibition (part of the Hexham Festival of Remembrance; see www.voicesandchoiceshexham.org) in the Prior’s Hall at Hexham Abbey.

At 2.15pm the Archbishop will arrive at the Sure Start Children's Centre, Beaufront Avenue NE46 1JD, which provides a range of services for families with children under five, working with Health Visitors, Midwives, Nursery Nurses, Childminders, Schools, Day Nurseries, Speech and Language Therapists and many others.

At 3.00pm he will visit Number 28, a community house on Derwent Road in the east of Hexham (NE46 1DJ) which organises many activities including for families during school holidays, introductory training courses plus health related events for all ages in the local community.

The new Bishop of Newcastle, Christine Hardman, who takes up her post on the 12th December, says, "I am so encouraged and thrilled that the Tynedale Community Bank project is now underway.  I congratulate all who have worked so hard to arrive at this moment and pray for the ongoing life of this wonderful project which will help so many people and make such a positive contribution to the community.”
