New Safeguarding Adviser for the Diocese of York

Monday 23rd November 2015

Dave Finan has been appointed as the new Safeguarding Adviser for the Diocese of York. Dave comes to the Diocese of York from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, where he was the Local Authority Designated Officer.

Dave said, “As a practising Christian I am passionate about the Church being a safe place for all no matter what your age, gender or background.  My background is in child protection and I have worked within local government for twenty six years as a social worker.  I have been involved in various roles within children’s safeguarding, including managing a team of front line workers, statutory children and court work, reviewing the care plans of looked after children and chairing complex child protection and safeguarding meetings. The last four years have seen me involved in making the children’s workforce safe for local authority, private, statutory and voluntary sectors, in the role of a Local Authority Designated Officer for East Riding of Yorkshire Council.”

Dave is also a member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, who share the Gospel across the motorcycling community.  Dave said, “God has taken me on mission with the Christian Motorcyclists Association over the last seven years and he has taught me that any destination is a goal, but getting there and the journey itself are often more important. The stops we make and the people we meet, things that happen, who we are and what we believe and do, shape the journey. My prayer is that the journey of safeguarding for the Church will be a journey taken together and I look forward to working with churches across the Diocese of York to make that happen.”

Dave is married to Laura.  They have three children, and his family also have experience of adoption, and being foster carers for a local authority.

This appointment is a key element of the operational safeguarding provision for the Diocese of York, the work of which is overseen by the Diocesan Strategic Safeguarding Group chaired by Professor Sue Proctor, former Chief Nurse of Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority, and comprising representatives of the NSPCC and statutory bodies from across the Diocese.
