Bishop of Sodor and Man announces his retirement

Friday 22nd July 2016

Bishop Robert Paterson has announced that he will retire on Friday 11 November 2016 having served as Diocesan Bishop of Sodor and Man for eight and half years and over four and a half decades in stipendiary ministry.

He commented, 'Retirement will be an interesting experience after all these years but something to look forward to and relish!'

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said, “I offer my heartfelt thanks for Bishop Robert’s ministry on the Isle of Man, for the vision and energy which he has brought to the mission of the Gospel in the Diocese, and for his faithful witness through times of change.  From the start Bishop Robert has been determinedly committed to support the witness and outreach of the Church in the Diocese of Sodor and Man, and there is much to celebrate.

In the wider Church of England as Chair of the Readers’ council Bishop Robert has played a key role in fostering and encouraging this ministry.

Bishop Robert has served the churches in his Diocese for eight and a half years with a wry sense of humour and a heart full of God’s love. He has a great passion to see people’s faith come alive and to see the Church of Jesus Christ flourishing. I have deeply appreciated his support, his counsel, his friendship, and faithful service to the Church and community on the Isle of Man.

May God bless Bishop Robert and Pauline as he begins his retirement and as they spend more time with God and with each other, without the burdens of episcopal office.”
