Rowntree Foundation Chief Executive to be installed as a Canon Provincial

Thursday 20th October 2016

Julia Unwin, Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, will be installed as a Canon Provincial for the Province of York at Evensong on Thursday 20 October at York Minster. The Dean of York, the Very Reverend Vivienne Faull, will officiate at the service and Julia will be presented for installation by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.

The honorary title of ‘Canon Provincial’ is enshrined in The 1999 Cathedrals Measure and provides for provincial representation to support the work of York Minster.  Julia is one of six Canons Provincial installed at York Minster during the last year.

Commenting on the service, Viv Faull said Julia’s appointment recognises her outstanding commitment, support and contribution to the life of the community of York and the national impact of her work on Living Wage over recent years. She said:

“The role of Canon Provincial is an expression of affection and friendship for members of the extended Minster family with whom we have a special regard or relationship. As a Living Wage employer York Minster is grateful for Julia’s advocacy for the Living Wage and for all her work on behalf of those living in poverty.

“The honorary title of Canon Provincial allows us to recognise exceptional individuals who have made a distinguished contribution to the Church and society in the North of England.  It is also an expression of the strength of our links with other churches within the Anglican Communion and beyond.”

The service starts at 5.15pm on Thursday 20 October and will last for just over an hour.  Everyone is welcome to attend.
