The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu learnt about the army’s role in defence engagement around the world when he visited one of the Army’s Divisional Headquarters in York on Friday 4 November 2016.

Major General Giles Hill, the General Officer Commanding 1st UK Division based at Imphal Barracks in York explained about the role of the headquarters which commands seven adaptable force brigades and a logistic brigade spread all over the UK.  The Divisional headquarters engages with many countries in Europe, Africa, and parts of Asia.  It tasks military teams from its Brigades to assist many foreign armies with their training in order to improve stability and develop their security capabilities within their own countries.

1st UK Division moved to York from Germany over a year ago and is also responsible for community engagement, recruitment and assistance given in different regions during emergencies such as the floods last year.
