Celebrating 150 years of Reader Ministry

Saturday 19th November 2016

On Saturday, 19th November 2016 the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu will be celebrating 150 years of Reader Ministry, with all those who are an essential part of, and stepping into this rich and longstanding ministry for the first time.

Since 1866 Readers have been bridging the gap between the church and the people, bringing different groups of people from all walks of life into the body of the church.  Reader ministry was created to ‘make connections between a rapidly secularized society.’  If that was the case 150 years ago, their role is no less relevant or essential now in a culture that is ever more distant to the voice of the church and the message of Jesus Christ.  Readers are becoming increasingly involved with teaching and training both locally and diocese wide, for at the heart of Reader Ministry is the call to preach, teach and represent the Church in the life of the community reflecting the light and love of Christ wherever they are, bridging the gap between the ‘Word and the world’.

During the service, Candidates make promises about how they will conduct their ministry, are blessed by the Archbishop, and welcomed by their supporters both in and outside of the church to this vocational ministry.  The Diocese of York will be licensing five new Readers and also welcoming in five Readers who have come from other dioceses.  All of our Readers throughout the diocese are invited to the service to share in these celebrations.

The Archbishop said, “Readers bring their gifts, calling and experience to us in order that we might be effective witnesses to the wonderful life Christ offers. They are confident proclaimers of the Gospel who guide us in prayer and lead us in worship.  Join me in praying for all Readers who give so much in service to their congregations and communities.”

The service will take place at York Minster on Saturday 19th November at 11am followed by a celebratory meal with the Archbishop for Readers and their families.
