Archbishop Holgate’s Christmas Service in York Minster

Friday 9th December 2016

Archbishop Holgate’s School, York, is hosting its annual Christmas carol service on Wednesday 14 December 2016 at 7.30pm. This year, the school is delighted to welcome their Patron, Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York to the service to be held in the nave of York Minster. The service is open to all.

The Archbishop of York said, “This service is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate joyfully Emmanuel - God with us - in the person of Jesus Christ.  I pray that everyone who comes will be able to enter more deeply into the Christmas Story and that God will bring His light and life to all our Christmas celebrations.”

The Christmas carol service is one of the largest in the region, with over 1200 people enjoying the retelling of the Christmas story through music, drama, dance, video, bible readings and preaching. This is one of the highlights of the school calendar in this 470th year since the school’s foundation, making it one of the oldest schools in the city.

The service is designed to retell the Christmas story with original sketches which reflect on less familiar characters; starting with Elizabeth and Zechariah – the parents of John the Baptist - and culminating with Jesus’ encounter with Simeon and Anna at the Temple. There are seven different choirs and two orchestras; involving students, staff, parents, governors, members of the community and local primary school children. There will also be a rendition of the German carol Leise rieselt der Schnee, which has been shared with Archbishop Holgate’s partner school in Leipzig.

Doors open at 7.00pm, please be seated by 7.20pm. After the service everyone is invited to stay for mulled wine and mince pies.
