Friday 10th February 2017

On Sunday 19th February, the town of Tadcaster will come together and officially celebrate the re-opening of its road bridge, nearly 14 months after its closure following collapse over Christmas 2015. The Archbishop is to bless the bridge at midday approx.

The floods that took place on Boxing Day then led to the undermining of the bridge and, three days later on the 29th December 2015, the bridge partially collapsed, splitting the community in two, devastating the town’s economy and causing hardship for everyone in the town.

So, with the completion of the bridge in sight, the town’s local authorities planned a day when the community could look back on the year gone by and look forward to a bright future.  The day of events in the town will be launched by the Archbishop of York with a special blessing of the bridge at noon.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said: “I am delighted to join with the people of Tadcaster to bless the bridge on Sunday and I am praying for all families, friends and neighbours reconnected by this vital link.  I would like to thank all who have worked tirelessly for the bridge to be re-opened and for the whole community who have come together to celebrate and support each other throughout.”

Events and activities for the whole community will take place throughout the day culminating in a parade of hundreds of lanterns of all shapes and sizes across the bridge as the sun sets.

“ We’d love it if not only the community of Tadcaster but people from far and wide came and joined us for the day,” said Project Manager, David Gluck.  “The re-built bridge in itself is a sight to see but there’s so much more to this little town for people to see, do and enjoy – come and discover what an amazing community Tadcaster is!”
