Sports Ministry Day at Bishopthorpe

Wednesday 1st November 2017

The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu and the Archbishops’ Sports Ambassador, the Rt Revd Tony Porter today welcomed delegates from the Northern Province of the Church of England to Bishopthorpe Palace for a Sports Ministry Day.

Bishop Tony Porter said: “Getting together those who are involved in Sports ministry provides a great opportunity to explore how this can be effective in reaching the marginalised and excluded. It was fantastic to hear from Marcellus and Andrew Thorp and the outreach work that they are doing.”

The Sports Ministry Day included a welcome address by the Archbishop of York, a keynote address from the Rt Revd Philip North, Bishop of Burnley, and presentations by Marcellus Baz BEM, Sports Personality of the Year: Unsung Hero, and Andrew Thorp from Street Soccer Academy.

Marcellus is the founder of Nottingham School of Boxing & Switch Up which provides free boxing classes to hundreds of young people in disaffected areas and transitions them into employment training education.  Andrew is the founder and Chief executive of Street Soccer Academy, a charity which enables long-term positive change to be applied to the lives and circumstances of many isolated people.

The Archbishop of York said: “Sport has a wonderful way of opening doors of opportunity that might seemed closed in other spheres. Through sport we discover more of all that God created us to be and in working or playing with others we are able to appreciate the amazing gifts that God has given to each one of them.  The person I fear becomes my team mate and we can learn what it is to support and rely on one another. There is no greater phrase to hear on a sports field than a team-mate shouting ‘WITH YOU’”.
