Read today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 7.7-12

From his wheelchair the old friar told his story:

‘A boy had been invited to play at his friend’s house, whose father was an artist. Told to keep quiet, lest they disturb him at his work, they looked for a good hideout. The broom cupboard on the stairs opposite the artist’s studio was a fantastic den. Until suddenly everything in the cupboard came crashing down on the boys, brooms, pots, pans, in a horrendous explosion of noise. The artist’s door opened. Sheer terror!

“What’s going on out here? Ah – I see.” Not so stern after all.  “Come and see – come and see what I’ve been up to”. He led them into the studio, a room ablaze with light and colour, and he showed them his handiwork.’

Telling this story of his own childhood, the Franciscan grinned as he recalled the invitation to ‘come and see’. The story spoke volumes to him of a Father who loves to give good gifts to his children.

Don’t be afraid to ask, to seek, to knock. In fact do it much more, do it often, do it always. God our Father is always ready to hear from us.

What longing do I bring to God today? What do I seek to know, to understand? Am I knocking, hoping the door will open? Jesus says to us all, “Come and see”.

Today’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 7.7-12

‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

‘In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.
