Be Prepared to Change Our Lifestyle

Yes, Jesus’ masterclass in repentance and obedience shows us how we need to change – not just in our expectations but in our lifestyle, if we are going to be ready to receive all that he has for us, and live life to the full in his Kingdom of justice, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Some people know what it’s like to change their lifestyle. For example, as a father and grandfather, I know that preparing for the birth of a baby is a long process of adjustment – of thinking about things and doing things differently. In those nine months before the baby arrives, there are many practical things that have to change to make the house safe and baby-friendly: clearing out rubbish we’ve collected in our child-free lives; making room for all the baby paraphernalia we will need. It may be an uncomfortable time, not only physically, but also emotionally for both parents, as they prepare to be parents. Examining their lifestyle to see what may have to change: it may be giving up wine, smoking, coffee, partying every night or working too long hours. Asking themselves – will we be fit parents? How will we be able to help this new life flourish and grow?

Yes, having a baby changes the way we live our lives. And when Jesus Christ comes and lives with us, that will change our lives for eternity. Are we fit? Are we ready?
