Bicentenary Service in York Minster on 16 June 2011

200 years of Church Schools  2011 is the bi-centenary of the Church of England National Society, the body that established hundreds of Church schools in the 19th century and continues to champion, support and promote Christian education today.

There will be celebrations of the bi-centenary at Westminster Abbey and in every diocese across the country. In the Diocese of York, schools will be exploring their heritage and reflecting on what it means to be a Church school today. A celebration service will be held in York Minster on Thursday 16 June 2011, led by the Archbishop, and is expected to involve every Church school in the diocese.

The service (10.30am) will focus on children and young people and include lots of music, drama and art, bringing together projects that are being worked on in schools across the diocese (schools will receive a preparatory pack early in the Summer term). The service will be followed by a giant picnic and, in the afternoon, a number of different workshops in or around the Minster and at other nearby locations, finishing by about 2.15pm.
