Bishopthorpe Bowling Club

The present Bowling Club is now in its 85th year, the turf having been laid in Acaster Lane in 1927. At the inaugural meeting in June 1927 the vicar, the Rev. Canon F L Perkins, was in the chair and the then Archbishop of York, Cosmo Gordon Lang, was asked to be an Honorary Vice-President. And a membership fee of 10 shillings was agreed!
Bishopthorpe Bowling club are a Community Amateur Sports Club affiliated to Bowls England and play flat green bowls. Although small, they are an enthusiastic club and currently have more than 40 Members, most of whom are in the 60+ age group. They do, however, welcome members of all ages from 12 upwards.
They run five teams playing in three different leagues around York. These include the Private Clubs League (playing mixed triples), the Veterans League (for men over 60) and the Tockwith League (playing mixed teams of four).
Bishopthorpe Bowling club is constantly on the lookout for new members that they can welcome to the sport. The club has weekly Club Nights and social bowling events throughout the summer. Members are able to play at any time during the Season and we are always pleased to welcome visitors. Trial sessions for newcomers to the sport can be easily arranged.
