Relate Mid-Yorkshire is one of the biggest Relate charities in the country and has been serving the people of North and West Yorkshire for over 50 years.  Relate Mid-Yorkshire helps 3,000 people a year by providing more than 12,000 counselling appointments at its centres in Harrogate, Leeds, Selby and York and in local schools.

Relate’s purpose is to encourage people to make personal changes that will enable them to engage in committed and loving relationships for the benefit of themselves, their families and society.

Relate is dedicated to helping children and young people through difficult times, inspiring them to achieve all that they can.

Relate Mid-Yorkshire offers the following services:

  • Relationship counselling for individuals and couples.

  • Children and young people’s counselling, especially where they are affected by parents’ separation or divorce.

  • Family counselling to help with a wide range of relationship issues, including between siblings and in blended families.

  • Psychosexual therapy for couples and individuals where their difficulties are of a sexual nature.

  • Education and learning, including programmes in parenting, relationship education, and basic counselling skills.

Counselling helps people understand their own feelings and those of others.

Relate's highly-skilled counsellors allow clients to be heard without being judged and to find tools and techniques to help them communicate with their partner, family or friends.

Young people often lack self-confidence and have low self-esteem. Many are experiencing a sense of loss, through bereavement or family breakdown. Some are carers for parents or siblings, while others have witnessed domestic violence or experienced sexual or physical abuse. Specially trained counsellors encourage children and young people to express their feelings through play and art.  Counsellors help children identify the areas of their lives where they can make changes and improve their relationships with parents, siblings and friends.  They also help them set goals, giving them hope for the future.

Relate's service is open to everyone and Relate does not discriminate because of age, sexual orientation, ethnicity or disability.  Relate does not impose a minimum charge for counselling, but asks adult clients to donate what they can afford.  The Relate service for children and young people is completely free, thanks to funding from BBC Children in Need and the generous support of local and regional charitable trusts.
