Tools with a Mission

What we do

Tools with a Mission has a simple goal – to help people lift themselves out of poverty by providing them life transforming tools.

We work with partners across the world providing training and practical support for children in poverty, marginalised people, vulnerable women and everyone suffering from the crushing despair of extreme poverty.  Our partners train them in practical skills and at the end of their course we provide them with the tools they need to start their new business.  Our partners are mainly Christian and together we see this as a practical expression of the love of God.

The list of tools and equipment we provide is extensive and includes carpenters, mechanics, electricians, plumbers, builders and any every other trade kit you can think of.  We even provide the tools to set up the training workshops.  We also provide sewing and knitting machines, all of which go out with materials and spares to keep them working for years.  We also send out computers and equip whole schools, as well laptops for Pastors and students.  If that were not enough we also send out school books and scholar packs containing everything a child needs to start school, once again we even equip entire school libraries.  Plus of course bikes, school furniture and on and on…

How we do it

Everything we send out is donated by individuals, churches, schools and any number of other organisations and companies.  Tools and equipment are collected by our national team of volunteers and taken to one of our seven depots across the UK who sort, refurbish and pack into kits.  Everything ends up in our Ipswich centre which sends out two or three containers a month, each one with around twelve tonnes of life changing tools.

Why we do it

Meet Greti, no one could better answer the question.  Greti has had a heart breaking life with far too much sadness and tragedy for one so young. She lost both her parents and was left looking after her younger brothers and sisters. She has also been disabled by polio and walks with the aid of a crutch.

Greti - a sewing machine from TWAM helped her to earn a living with her sewing skills

She came to one of TWAM’s partners, Mindset, in Uganda for help.  They trained her in tailoring and she is now a very skilled young lady.  But all this would have been for nothing if Greti had not then received a TWAM sewing machine.  With her new machine Greti started making school uniforms and quickly gained a very good reputation. She not only earned enough money to support herself and her siblings but was also able to buy two pigs.  Her business quickly grew to 40 pigs and a small shop.

All because she was given a donated and lovingly refurbished sewing machine saved from the recycling centre!

This is TWAM’s amazing ministry giving unwanted tools and equipment the potential to transform a life.  We are delighted that the Archbishop of York has been Patron of Tools with a Mission since 2007.  For more information please visit TWAM's website.
