There are now less than two weeks left to view the must-see theatre show of the summer - the York Minster Mystery Plays. The plays have only been performed within the dramatic interior of the Minster twice in their 700 year history, making this a unique once in a generation opportunity. Rarely will you ever have the chance to see theatre on such a grand scale anywhere in the UK.
People from all around the world have already enjoyed the plays, which tell the greatest story ever told from the creation of heaven and earth to the Last Judgement, including visitors from New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Switzerland, the USA and South Africa. The run has received excellent feedback from audiences and theatre reviewers alike including 4 stars from The Guardian and The Observer.
The epic production will notch up some impressive statistics with 41 performances throughout the 5 week run and the 1,000 seater theatre requiring over 60 tonnes of materials and more than 2,000 man-hours to complete. It involves a 150 strong community cast, and hundreds more volunteer MysteryMakers. The mesmerizing Ark scene required 68 animals to be brought to life by the amazing props department and talented volunteers. It has even been given the royal seal of approval with a visit from HRH Princess Beatrice of York last week, whose father is the Patron of the Mystery Plays.
Vivienne Faull, Dean of York, commented:
“It’s fantastic to see that the Mystery Plays are being enjoyed by both visitors to the city and local residents. They have a long association with the York stretching right back to medieval times and it is great that we can play our part in helping to maintain this tradition. Once tickets are gone they’re gone so we hope people will grasp the opportunity to see this once in a generation spectacular within the dramatic setting of York Minster. To help, we’ve launched a special 50% discount on all unsold evening tickets for that day’s performance, enabling even more people to experience the show.”
Toby Gordon from York, who plays Lucifer, commented:
"I feel very privileged to be performing in the Minster, which is a totally unique opportunity for any actor. There is vast creative talent in the York area and a ticket to the Mysteries offers a chance to see a great deal of it. Working on this show has been a wonderful and memorable experience, consistently both challenging and rewarding. It is my ongoing pleasure to work with so many brilliant people on such an exciting production. Do not miss it.”
Directed by Phillip Breen, with script by Tony nominated writer Mike Poulton, the magnificent set was created by award winning theatre designer Max Jones, with the staging described as ‘visually ravishing’ by The Observer and “A production of memorable spectacle” by the British Theatre Guide.
