The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell is pleased to announce the appointment of The Venerable Mark Steadman to the post of Chief of Staff.

The Venerable Mark Steadman has been serving as the Archdeacon of Stow and Lindsey since 2015. During this time he has also had periods of secondment as Acting Dean of Lincoln Cathedral and Interim Diocesan Secretary. Mark will join the Archbishop’s staff in the autumn. He succeeds The Revd Canon Malcolm Macnaughton who vacated the role in December 2019 to become the Suffragan Bishop of Repton.

In response to his appointment, Mark said:
“I am pleased and humbled to be invited to serve as the Chief of Staff for Archbishop Stephen at such an important and significant time for the Church and wider society. I am looking forward to leading the team at Bishopthorpe as well as working collaboratively with Bishops, Dioceses and Cathedrals, central and local government and other statutory and voluntary partners in support of the Archbishop’s priorities of prayer, evangelism and being a voice for the North. I am hugely grateful for my time in the diocese of Lincoln and for the people, clergy and places that have helped shaped my ministry thus far”.

In making the appointment, Archbishop Stephen said:
"I am delighted that Mark has accepted the invitation to come and work with me at Bishopthorpe. He will support my ministry in the diocese and Province of York and across the whole Church of England as we emerge from the difficulties of the past year and learn how to inhabit a new landscape. Mark brings with him a wealth of experience and I am confident he will be at the heart of creating and implementing the Church of England’s vision to allow the whole of our lives to be shaped by Christ.”
