Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell dedicated a new stained glass window and blessed the newly-restored organ at All Saints' Church, Hovingham, during a Sunday service on the 3rd July.

The window by Helen Whittaker commemorates Sir Marcus Worsley, 5th Baronet and Lady Worsley. Sir Marcus was a dedicated churchman who was a Church Commissioner and served for many years on the General Synod. He was Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Deputy Chairman of the National Trust and a Member of Parliament. Lady Worsley was a keen gardener and played a prominent role in the community.

Helen Whittaker is an internationally-renowned and award winning artist and designer, particularly celebrated for her work with stained glass. Her work is featured in Westminster Abbey. In thinking about Sir Marcus and the Worsley family, Helen took as her starting point ideas concerning family, responsibility, stewardship and protection. The design is built around the sturdy image of an oak tree, like those in the woods surrounding Hovingham. The tree represents rootedness, a sense of place and belonging, and is symbolic of the family tree, of longevity and continuity.

The organ was installed in the church in the 1870s and was in poor condition. Sir Marcus left some money in his will to restore the organ. This was supplemented by many others including a very generous donation for the Bramall Trust.
