We know that the good news of Jesus Christ is hope for every person and for the whole world.
Stephen Cottrell
Archbishop of York

We live in a world where many people are growing up with little or no knowledge of the Christian faith, and with little or no contact with the Christian Church. Yet we know that the good news of Jesus Christ is hope for every person and for the whole world – the medicine that heals the deepest ailments of the human heart.

Throughout my ministry, I have sought to share this good news with others. As Archbishop of York, I long to do so personally, to encourage and equip others – both individual Christians and Christian communities – to do the same.

In this ministry, I know that I am following in the footsteps of my predecessors to enable the Church to live and share the gospel more joyfully, confidently, and effectively.

As with prayer, when I speak of “just evangelism”, I am not minimising this calling, but emphasising its depth and priority. Evangelism is not simply about words or programmes; it is about bearing witness to God’s vision for the world. One of the most compelling ways to share the gospel is to offer a vision of what humanity is called to be, as we see it in Jesus Christ, and of what the world can become when we live by God’s purposes.

For this reason, the way we inhabit the world matters. Our commitment to living sustainably, our pursuit of justice for those who are exploited or excluded, and our participation in God’s particular concern for the poor all lie at the very heart of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.
