The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, blessed the Winding House, Victoria Dock, Hull, on the evening of Sunday 8th May, before leading a Service of Thanksgiving at St John’s Church, Drypool, Hull.

The Winding House Trust Ltd, associated with Victoria Dock Church, have taken a 25 year lease on The Winding House and plan to renovate it and run it as a community centre, church and café.

The Revd Jason Taylor of Victoria Dock Church said, “It was a great honour to have the Archbishop come and bless the Winding House.  We received the keys to the Winding House last month, but the Archbishop’s blessing marks the real start of the project for us.  We need to find a quarter of a million pounds to renovate the Winding House, and we hope the people and businesses of Hull will support us in raising this money.”

After blessing the Winding House, the Archbishop led a Service of Thanksgiving at St John’s Church, Drypool to mark the end of a five year project to transform the church building into a warm and welcoming church and community centre.

The building’s structure and roof has been refurbished, making it warm and watertight. Access has been improved and new spaces, including an exhibition/meeting space, meeting rooms, toilets, and a café have been created. A new heating system has also been installed.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said, ‘Churches are at their very best when they are hospitable to all the people around them and serving their communities – and infecting them with God’s goodness!  As Christians, we are commanded to love our neighbour, and the people of St John are loving and serving the people of Drypool with these new facilities.’
