Monday 9th May 2011

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, visited St Hilda’s Church of England Primary School, Ampleforth on Friday 6th May, to celebrate 200 years of Church Schools.

The Archbishop met with Faye Thornton, Callum Smith-Hay, Ciara Smith-Hay, and Hannah Casey, who showed him an altar cloth they had made, showing the story of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Dr Sentamu said, “It was wonderful to meet the staff and pupils at St Hilda’s Church of England Primary Schoo, and see the work they had been doing.  This year we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of Church Schools.  They were established to serve all people in the communities in which they were located, and they still do that today, giving children of all faiths or none a wonderful education.”

After visiting St Hilda’s School, the Archbishop visited St Francis Church of England Primary School and All Saints Church of England Secondary School, Ingleby Barwick, and the North of England Refugee Service in Middlesbrough.
