Archbishop Sentamu to bless stadium ahead of Hull derby

Monday 21st March 2016

The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu will be visiting the KC Lightstream Stadium, home of Hull Kingston Rovers, this week to bless the ground ahead of Good Friday’s derby between the Robins and local rivals Hull FC.

Archbishop Sentamu’s visit to the ground will form part of his six-month pilgrimage of prayer, witness and blessing across Yorkshire and will see him visit the stadium on Wednesday afternoon, just days before the two great rugby rivals compete in Super League.

The Archbishop is connected to the club via the nearby Archbishop Sentamu Academy, a close partner of the Robins that works alongside the club in a number of capacities, and his visit will also include a tour of the ground and a rousing rendition of Hull KR’s anthem, Red Red Robin, which will be performed by pupils from the nearby Stockwell Primary School.

The club’s CEO Mike Smith said: “We are honoured to welcome Archbishop Sentamu to the KC Lightstream Stadium on Wednesday, particularly during a week that means so much to the club and rugby league supporters in the city of Hull.

“From what we’ve heard, the Archbishop is a great character who would probably love nothing more than to pick up a rugby ball and run out onto the pitch, but he has kindly offered his time to bless the stadium ahead of the derby on Good Friday.

“We have one or two surprises in store for him too as a token of our appreciation for his support.”

Archbishop Sentamu’s visit to the stadium is part of his six-month pilgrimage around the Diocese of York during which he will spend six days in each of the 21 deaneries of the Diocese of York.

His latest visit to the city on Wednesday will also include pilgrimage prayers at St John’s Church in Rosmead Street, visits to Alexandra Court Residential Care Home, the Freedom Centre in Preston Road and Archbishop Sentamu Academy, before he walks to the stadium alongside Reverend Anne Richards, the school’s chaplain.
