Archbishop Sentamu to Visit HMP Kirkham During Crossroads Mission

Monday 5th September 2016

The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu is to visit an open men’s prison at Kirkham on Sunday 11 September. He will lead a morning service; attend a coffee morning to spend time with staff and prisoners; and will share his journey of faith as part of the Crossroads Mission accompanied by former Gladiator Warren ‘Ace’ Furman.

Archbishop Sentamu, together with all of the Bishops of the Northern Province, is joining the Crossroads Mission across the Blackburn Diocese from Thursday 8 September to Sunday 11September.  The Crossroads Mission is about local churches engaging in local mission, inviting individuals to find out more about Jesus and his love for all.

Governor Graham Beck said: “HMP Kirkham holds category D prisoners who can be reasonably trusted to serve their sentence in open conditions.  Our work is focused on connecting with each individual, to allow them to grow and develop new skills so that they thrive within the prison and in the wider community as they move on.”

Archbishop Sentamu said: “I was a Prison Chaplain once and every time I visit a prison I think of Matthew 25: ‘I was in prison and you came to visit me’. Warren ‘Ace’ Furman is joining me to share about how his life has changed through his faith in Jesus Christ. I believe all of us can make a fresh start with God and with one another. With God at your side, everything is possible!”

There will be no media access as part of this visit.  Photographs will be available from HMP Kirkham - contact Brian Mayne, Managing Chaplain at email:
