St George’s Day Celebrations at Bishopthorpe Palace

Tuesday 25th April 2017

School children from Archbishop of York Junior School today enjoyed an afternoon of games at Bishopthorpe Palace in celebration of St George's Day.

Around 60 children from the local primary school played games of Kwik Cricket on the lawn at Bishopthorpe Palace through hail, rain and shine,  and then enjoyed eating gingerbread people in the Great Hall.

Jonathan Green, Headteacher of Archbishop of York Junior School said, “It is a tradition that our pupils come to Bishopthorpe Palace to celebrate our Patron Saint of England. They enjoy being able to expend their energy in such wonderful surroundings, and we are always made to feel very welcome.  Freshly made gingerbread people always go down a treat!”

The Archbishop has previously called for St George’s Day to be a national holiday so that it could be celebrated more widely, inviting all to be proud of the country we live in.
