Archbishop of York to join Saddleworth Whit Walk on 9 June

Wednesday 7th June 2017

The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, will walk with Dobcross village for the Procession of Witness on Whit Friday, 9 June.

The Procession traditionally takes place on Whit Friday and involves villagers from Saddleworth walking from their local village to Uppermill, each accompanied by a marching band. It makes a very colourful and uplifting spectacle.

The Archbishop’s visit will commence at Dobcross Band Club at 9.30am where he will provide a commemorative prayer ‘in memory of absent friends’ before the playing of hymn tune ‘Silver Hill’ by Dobcross Silver Band and Dobcross Youth Band.

After presiding at a short service in Dobcross square, Archbishop Sentamu will lead a procession to Uppermill where he will make the address at the open-air, ecumenical service. All are welcome to attend the service on the King George V playing fields that commences at 11am.

The Archbishop will then lead the procession of Holy Trinity church and Sandy Lane Community Church together with school, villagers and two brass bands back to Dobcross.

The Archbishop of York said: “I am looking forward to joining the traditional walk of witness which promises to be an uplifting and fulfilling day.  I am only sorry that the demands on my diary mean that I cannot stay on for the superb brass band contests which will roll out later in the day. I would also like to thank in advance the many volunteers who make this day possible. This is a fantastic event and I do pray that all who take the time to follow that Cross of Witness will be reminded of the truth that in Jesus Christ is life and life in all its fullness”

The Bishop of Manchester, David Walker, will walk from Christ Church Friezeland, leaving at 10am, to join the Archbishop and other marching groups at Uppermill for the service at 11am.
