The Additional Curates Society

Additional Curates SocietyThe Additional Curates Society was founded in 1837 by a lay man, Joshua Watson, who was deeply concerned about the spiritual and social needs of people who were moving into the new industrial towns of England.

His principle concern was that there were no priests to minister to these people.  He founded the ACS to ensure that these new parishes would have priests.  In those days only parishes with financial resources could have a parish priest.   There were no diocesan or provincial funds available.  ACS appealed to wealthy parishes and individuals to help ensure that poor and populous parishes would not be denied the ministrations of a priest for want of financial resources.

To this day ACS continues this valuable work, for there are still poor and populous parishes up and down this land.  In these times of serious financial difficulties more and more parishes are coming to the society for help and support, ensuring that the gospel of Jesus Christ is still heard in these challenging and yet hugely rewarding areas of our land.

The other main thrust of the ACS’s work is in terms of encouraging vocations to the sacred priesthood.  The society has a wonderful track record both from its imaginative and highly successful Vocations Conferences, but also its parish placements where individuals are given the opportunity of spending up to a year working alongside parish clergy and experiencing for themselves every day ministry in the Church of England.

The proud boast of the society is “Every penny donated goes towards providing new priests” and the recently re-launched website http://www.additionalcurates.co.uk/ gives full details of this and some of the parishes who support the society both financially and prayerfully. ACS’s simple catch line is “Passionate about Priesthood” and ACS sincerely believes that the future of the continued success of the Church of England lies in its ability to continue to minister parish situations. ACS’s work of providing priests for parishes, both in terms of the on-going support of vocations and ordinands, and the financial support of parishes towards the cost of clergy expenses ensures this ministry continues in this present age.

The present ACS chairman is The Bishop of Pontefract, The Right Reverend Tony Robinson, and the council is represented by members of the Northern and Southern Provinces, Canterbury and York and the various dioceses in the Church of Wales.  The General Secretary, Father Darren Smith, can be contacted on 0121 382 5533, fr.smith@additionalcurates.co.uk or why not follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
